The Virginia Living Museum celebrated its 50th birthday on Nov. 13, 2016 with a day of giving back to the community. A record 4,626 visitors took advantage of 50 cent admission to explore the indoor and outdoor exhibits, live animal shows and planetarium programs.
Twelve area bakers responded to a challenge by the Junior League of Hampton Roads and produced elaborately and intricately decorated birthday cakes themed to the Museum’s exhibits. Winners were announced by Newport News Vice Mayor Tina Vick. Everyone sang Happy Birthday before the cakes were distributed. Thanks to all the bakers – the cakes tasted as delicious as they looked.
Grand Prize – The Mad Batter Bakery

Vice Mayor’s Prize – Bella Cakes
Ribbons were cut at three exhibits by families who supported the $5 million Future Ready Campaign. The Sarfan family dedicated the Mountain Stream exhibit. The Sheild family dedicated the Cornsnake/Chipmunk exhibit, and the Howell family dedicated benches at the Otter exhibit.
