Welcome to the Virginia Living Museum

Virginia’s Animal Attraction & Dino Destination

The Virginia Living Museum is a successful public-private partnership, since 1966, between the City of Newport News and the Virginia Living Museum, a public non-profit 501(c)(3) organization (54-6055922). Together we connect people to nature through educational experiences that promote conservation.
BUILT by the Community, BELOVED by the Community and SUSTAINED by the Community, the Museum depends on private donations to succeed. We appreciate your financial contribution to support engaging education, animal welfare and conservation experiences for you and your family. Please consider a gift to our Annual Fund or a planned gift to our Endowment for future sustainability.

Lets celebrate all dads today on Fathers Day, including Virginia native Hellbenders!

DID YOU KNOW -
Eastern hellbender salamanders are often known by many unflattering nicknames -- mud puppy, snot otter, grampus, and Allegheny alligator -- about adult male hellbenders should more accurately be known as doting fathers.

Unlike most wildlife species, male hellbenders provide exclusive care for their young for an extended period of seven months! Male hellbenders create a nest that they invite females to lay eggs in. The male then tends to the nest and eggs by procting it from intruders and by doing a behavior known as threading, in which the male will swim through and around the egg mass, which is thought to aid in oxygenating the eggs and providing them with antibacterial & antifungal secretions from their skin. But the kids are only protected by dad until they hatch; once theyre out of the egg, theyre off to fend for themselves.

While human fathers spend years with their kids, Hellbenders should still get a pat on the back as it is unusual in the animal kingdom for males in most species to provide little to any care for their young.
