Naturally Speaking Summer Family Series – June 29

We Love Bugs!

Speaker: Dr. Shawn Dash, Hampton University

Don’t get bugged about bugs – come and learn about them at the VLM! Join us for a fun and family-friendly look at the amazing critters that creep and crawl, hop and fly, swoop and dart … we’re talking about BUGS!  Dr. Dash is an entomologist (a bug scientist!) who will introduce you to some of the insects, spiders and their fascinating relatives that are such an important part of our amazing living world.  You’ll get to see some of the museum’s cool preserved insect collection up close – and meet a few of our live bug friends too! Seahorses in the Bay!

Speaker: Chris Crippen, VLM’s Aquarium Curator & Conservation Programs Coordinator

It’s always a special treat to see a live Seahorse!  If you’re lucky, you might discover one of these fanciful fish hiding among the strands of grass and seaweed in the Bay’s shallow waters.  Here at the VLM, you’ll be sure to see and learn about them during this special discovery adventure.  You’ll also find out the important scientific work the VLM is doing to help seahorses survive in the wild, and get a special “behind-the-scenes” look at the museum’s amazing seahorse breeding station! The Butterfly Society of Virginia will help your family learn about some of our most beautiful butterfly species, their life cycles, and which kinds of flowers they like to visit for their meals!  Bring your curiosity and questions to this evening that will celebrate color on the wing – and take home a butterfly craft!

Naturally Speaking Summer Family Series – August 3

Whose Track is That?

Speaker: Lisa Wright, VLM Education Associate & Collections Manager

Make Tracks to the VLM to learn about some of the“footprints” and signs that animals leave behind! That track in the sand – was it a fox, or maybe a coyote?  Down by the pond – did a beaver pass by here, or was it an otter?  I see webbed feet – a duck, or a goose?  And here’s some poo – who did the doo?  (Also called “scat”!)  You’ll have fun learning to identify some animal tracking secrets, and you can also paint your own model animal track to take home! Join Kelly as she discusses The Great American Eclipse that is happening August 21! In August, the United States will experience a rare and marvelous event – a total eclipse of the Sun. Kelly will give you all the information you need to know about how, when and where to view this astronomical spectacle safely.
