The Virginia Living Museum offers homeschool programs for all ages (Pre-K through 12).  Read the options below and then click the links below to sign up for the corresponding activities.

Available Programs:

September 7, 2022

Thinking like a Scientist

  • Time: 10am-10:45am
  • Participants: All ages
  • Description: Develop science skills like observing, predicting, classifying, interpreting, and measuring while learning how wildlife biologists use these skills to protect sea turtle populations.
  • Child classroom program and admission: $10.50 (M)/$15.00 (NM)
    Adult classroom program and admission: Free (M)/$18.00 (NM)

Canoes and Conservation

  • Time: 12pm-2pm
  • Participants: Ages 12+
  • Description: Gain experience conducting field tests to learn more about freshwater ecosystems. Make observations about Deer Park Lake, collect mud samples, take a close look at plankton, and try your hand at catching macroinvertebrates in dip nets.
  • Child lab program and admission: $12.50 (M)/$17.00 (NM)
    Adult admission: Free (M)/$18.00 (NM) – No seat on a canoe but welcomed to join land portions.

Microcosm

  • Time: 3pm-3:45pm
  • Participants: Ages 8+
  • Description: Join us in the not so distant future as a family out for an evening of stargazing suddenly experiences a medical emergency. A team of doctors takes a fantastic voyage into the human body to find out what’s wrong and explore the inner workings of the human body.

The Pluto Show

  • Time: 10am-10:45am
  • Participants: Ages 8+
  • Description: Why is Pluto no longer considered a planet? Have we ever been able to explore Pluto? Learn about the amazing New Horizons mission and what it will teach us about the king of the dwarf planets.

Foliage, Fragmentation, and Forests

  • Time: 12pm-1:30pm
  • Participants: Ages 12+
  • Description: Forests are vital to a healthy planet, but these important habitats can be overlooked because they are plentiful in our area. Join us to learn about woodland ecosystems, identifying trees, and forest management.

Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World System

  • Time: 2pm-3pm
  • Participants: Ages 11+
  • Description: Join us as we explore the scientific process through debate and discussion. Our question: Is the solar system geocentric, or heliocentric? We’ll explore Galileo’s most famous work in this interactive program.

Web of Life

  • Time: 10am-10:45am
  • Participants: All ages
  • Description: Let’s start at the bottom of the food chain. Together we’ll work to make a food web and discuss why different animals eat different things.

Fish Guts

  • Time: 12pm-12:30pm
  • Participants: Ages 12+
  • Description: Practice using and applying medical terminology during a fish dissection. Similarities and differences of human and fish anatomy will be compared and contrasted throughout the lab.

A Sky Full of Scales

  • Time: 2pm-2:45pm
  • Participants: Ages 6+
  • Description: Let’s have some reptilian fun! Join us for a game show gone crazy as we learn about reptiles and amphibians and search for them in the starry skies above us. You might even win a prize!

Star of Wonder: Mystery of the Christmas Star

  • Time: 10am-10:45am
  • Participants: Ages 8+
  • Description: Was the Star of Bethlehem an astronomical event? If so, what was it? Join us as we explore the skies of over 2000 years ago to see what the Magi might have seen in their skies which inspired them to take a perilous journey to greet a newborn king.

The Phases of the Moon

  • Time: 12pm-1:30pm
  • Participants: Ages 12+
  • Description: The reason why we see the phases of the Moon can be a challenging conceptual puzzle. Join us as we break down exactly what is happening and fully explore exactly what happens to our lunar neighbor every month. We’ll then head into the planetarium to see how an understanding of lunar science helped young lawyer Abraham Lincoln win his most famous case.

Animals of Virginia

  • Time: 2pm-2:45pm
  • Participants: All ages
  • Description: Meet native Virginia animals and discover their role in the ecosystem.
  • Child classroom program and admission: $10.50 (M)/$15.00 (NM)
    Adult classroom program and admission: Free (M)/$18.00 (NM)

SELF-GUIDED VISIT ONLY:

Cost: Non-members are $10.00 per student and $18 per adult. Members and ages 2 and under are free.

Note: Rates are discounted from General Admission: $19.95-$23.95 per adult, $16.95 per child (ages 3-12). For programs listed above, parents may accompany child into the programs at no additional charge, however, non-member parents must pay the $18 Museum admission fee.
