Summer Camps

Summer Camps 2019


Children must be four years old (for  PK) or have just completed grade you are registering for.

Week-long camps are offered for ages 4 through grade 5.


Museum educators help children explore nature and space through hands-on activities, touring through the Museum and touching live animals.


Reservations may be made in person, or by phone, using American Express, Discover MasterCard or Visa credit card or through our secure online form.

Class size is limited, so sign up early! A minimum enrollment is established for each class and must be met at least five days prior to the first class meeting. You may cancel up to one week before the class unless otherwise stated, and receive a refund less a $10 handling fee. After that time, no refunds can be made. If the Virginia Living Museum cancels the program, a full refund will be issued. Members receive a discount on all classes. Join now.

Full Day Summer Camp

Camps are Monday-Friday, 9:00am-3:00pm, bring your own snack and lunch

Cost: $235 VLM member, $265 non-members

Before care  8:00-9:00am   Cost: $40

After care     3:00-5:30pm   Cost: $95, daily snack included


June 24-28, 2019

Grades K and 1 – Ancient Beasts

Are animals the same today as they were in the past? Explore past and present life through indoor and outdoor activities and fossil digs! Let’s compare ancient mammals and reptiles with modern ones and discover how the world has changed.

Grades 2 and 3 – Animal Grossology

Some animals are adorable and super cuddly while others are nothing but gross! We’re going to discover disgusting animals that love to eat poop, enjoy living in filth, and smell worse than gym socks! Can you make it through the week without saying “ewwwwwwww”?

Grades 4 and 5 – Science Myth-teries

Viral videos…incredible stories…amazing photos…are these things for real? Or are they
just made up? We’ll tackle the science behind the myths and see if we can figure out
what’s confirmed…and what’s busted. We might even get to see an explosion or two!


August 19-23, 2019

Grades K and 1 – Stinky, Slimy and Squirmy  (red indicates class full)

Ever wondered why skunks were stinky? Or why slugs produce slime? Let’s explore the icky side of animals and the weird things they do to survive. It’s “snot” your typical camp!

Grades 2 and 3 – Searching the Solar System

Let’s go looking for life in the solar system! What does life need to survive and where can we find it? We will explore many places in our solar system to see if life would be possible there. Plus we will learn about the different ways scientists are searching for alien life in the universe.

Grades 4 and 5 – YIKES! They Lurk Everywhere!

Do you know what lives in your own neighborhood? Do you ever wonder what walks among you or lurks in the woods? Go on daily ecosystem explorations and perform field experiments to discover the various wild animals that live all around you!

How do you tell a moth from a butterfly? How are whales and fish different? Come investigate a different pair of confusing critters each day.

Nature’s Changes

From rain to sunshine, winter to spring, high to low tide, baby to adult – we will learn about the many amazing changes that occur all around us in nature.

From the equator to the poles, we will explore deserts, rainforests, oceans, and other habitats while learning about the plants and animals that live in them.

Come and meet the stars! Make friends with a constellation, shake hands with a comet and pal around with a planet.  We’ll be learning all about the different things you can find in space.

Junior Rocketeers

It’s your turn to be a rocket scientist!  Come learn all about how rockets work in this fun camp.  We’ll explore some of the basic principles of flight and rocketry, and even do a little launching of our own.

Are you always asking questions? Do you like learning about the natural world? Become a scientist for a week and explore five exciting careers in the natural sciences.

Journey to the outer solar system with us as we explore Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune…and what happened to Pluto?  Find out all about the solar system’s most distant denizens on this exciting adventure!

Junior Naturalists

Come explore the diversity of habitats that surround us during this full-day field-based camp. We will visit forests, marshes, and the Chesapeake Bay in our quest to learn about the plants and animals of Tidewater Virginia.

Time: 9:30am-4pm
