Summer Tours

Get a closer look at the Virginia Living Museum’s animals and exhibits with these tours conducted by members of the Museum’s Curatorial staff during Spring Break and the summer.


Walk-with-KeepeWalk with the Keeper

Fourth Tuesday of the month at 8:15am

Summer:  August 29 

A unique experience awaits you as you Walk with the Keeper… See what happens before the museum opens! Wake up the animals, experience their morning feedings and help ready the animals for a wild day at the Virginia Living Museum!

Guided by the animal keeper, journey to areas of the museum where visitors are not allowed. Your tour will bring you to the following stops:

  • Animal holding area
  • Animal food prep facility
  • Viewing of morning feedings for following animals: (pending availability) otter, birds in coastal aviary, bobcat, red wolves, turkey and deer
  • Experience morning animal release from safe houses
  • Witness otter, coastal aviary, turkey, bobcat or wolf enrichment activities (pending availability)

Our tour begins promptly at 8:15am so arrive by 8am. Wait at front glass doors for the Keeper to arrive.

Note: Wear comfortable shoes~ dress for weather. Be prepared for extended walking.
Tours last 45 minutes. Tickets must be purchased by 4pm the evening before.

Cost: $12 VLM members, $14 non-members (museum admission is additional).

Age: 4 and above

Maximum in Group: 12 guests

Endangered Encounter

Thursdays at 3pm

Summer:  through August 31

This is your chance to meet up close and personal the museum’s federal and state endangered and threatened species. From Sturgeon to Sea Turtle to Red Wolf to the comeback story of the majestic Bald Eagle, this special tour explores the status of these fragile creatures and their future survival. Led by Curatorial Director, George Mathews, you will tour throughout the museum and behind the scenes to see how these at risk animals live, and why they are protected.

Your tour will bring you to see many of the following protected animals:

  • Loggerhead sea turtle
  • Wood turtle
  • Bald Eagle
  • Red Wolf
  • Blackbanded sunfish
  • Roanoke logperch
  • Shortnose sturgeon
  • Barking treefrog
  • Eastern tiger salamander
  • Eastern glass lizard
  • Eastern chicken turtle

Note: Wear comfortable shoes. Be prepared for extended walking. Tours last 45 minutes.

Turtle Talk & Tourchicken-turtle-neck-stretched-out-20130215-LRW

Fridays at 3pm

Summer: through August 25 

Come along with us & see several of the 24 species of turtles that you can find right here in Virginia. A Herpetologist will accompany you to explore places in the museum that is seldom seen by visitors to get a close encounter of the turtle kind!

So book your tickets today to learn more about these terrific reptiles. The tour will include tantalizing facts about snappers, sea turtles & sliders.

Tours last 45 minutes.

Cost: $12 VLM members, $14 non-members (plus museum admission, which is required).

Age: 3 and above

Be a Vet Walk & Talk Tour

Summer:  August 14  (Mondays at noon and 2pm)

A unique behind the scenes chance to see how our medical staff takes care of the variety of animals at the museum. From frogs to foxes every animal requires special treatment. Tours can include our animal medical support area, animal holding and a chance to meet a special patient. Participants will meet in the Wild & Well area.

Tours last 45 minutes.

Cost: $12 VLM members, $14 non-members (plus museum admission, which is required).

Age: 4 and above

Maximum in Group: 12 guests
