General Requirements (All Volunteers)

Submit completed application. All applications are reviewed. Selected applicants will meet with Volunteer Services staff to match skills and interests. Position offers are made based on successful interviews and reference checks. Orientation and training are required of new volunteers; work one shift per week; outgoing, friendly personality. Availability for these volunteer positions is year-round; morning and afternoon hours daily unless otherwise specified.

Note: No fee is required for applying. As part of the screening process, adult applicants must complete an online background check with Verified Volunteers. Cost to applicant: $12.50.  A link will be provided after successful reference checks.

All VLM Volunteers are required wear an official VLM uniform. Options include:

  • $15 for a new T-shirt
  • $5 for a gently used T-shirt
  • Borrowed VLM smock

For your convenience an online volunteer scheduling portal is an additional option for a one time $5 fee.

Note: Volunteer placement at the Virginia Living Museum is subject to an official position offer, space availability, and completion of 2-hour orientation plus additional training depending on assignment. Parental permission required for volunteers younger than 18 years of age.

Due to the volume of applications, processing may take several weeks.

The Virginia Living Museum uses volunteers in a wide variety of areas.

Family Volunteering

Ages 11-14 with parent/guardian: Applicable positions are: Exhibit Interpreter; must be age 13 with parent for Touch Tank.


Ages 15 and above: Applicable positions: Astronomy, Exhibit Interpreter, Horticulture, Museum Store, Pop Up Discovery Stations.

Ages 18 and above: All positions applicable, including Animal Welfare and Conservation positions.
