Shark Awareness Day 2021

Are you ready to learn all about the toothy hunters of the ocean? The Virginia Living Museum will be celebrating Shark Awareness Day and with it whole slew of fun and educational activities, such as:

  • Artifacts – view a variety of shark-related objects and learn all about these engaging creatures
  • Shark Cage – see our shark dive cage and learn about how these objects are used to study sharks
  • Feedings – at 12pm there is a shark feeding tour, and at 2pm there is a Chesapeake Bay aquarium feeding
  • Shark Guts – Dive into the sticky, slimy, and amazing world of shark guts to discover why they are important to our ecosystems
  • Shark Snacks – Get up-close and personal with a variety of shark meals by learning how shark teeth determine what they eat
  • Take a Shark Quiz and see what type of shark you are!

More surprises to come!

Experience Turtle Census 2021

Location: Children’s Garden
Every year in June and July our Herpetology team sets up live-capture, baited hoop-net turtle traps in Deer Park Lake behind the Museum to catch and survey as many turtles as possible. VLM staff and volunteers gather all of the turtles that are collected in these nets and spend the morning identifying the species and sex of turtles, cleaning the shell to remove any stuck-on algae, and using a special marking system to determine whether each turtle is new for the year or a recapture from previous years.

July Turtle Census 2021

Come to the Children’s Garden to see this 10 year and running conservation survey in action and ask questions to our knowledgeable staff and volunteers.

Jurassic Giants

Experience the largest animatronic dinosaur the Virginia Living Museum has ever featured. Our conservation garden will be the home of Giganotosaurus!

Experience a variety of other roaring, stomping, animatronic dinosaurs in indoor and outdoor galleries!  Journey back millions of years to the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods and experience life-like dinosaurs around every turn.

Dinosaurs will include indoor and outdoor galleries including the following Dinosaurs:

  • Giganotosaurus
  • Suchomimus
  • T.rex Photo-Op
  • Deinonychus Robot
  • Edmontosaurus
  • Edmontosaurus Nest

LIVE this STARturday Night! The Virginia Living Museum STARGAZING goes virtual on FACEBOOK LIVE STREAM! Join us at 7:30pm live for 30Starturday Night LIVE minutes to talk with Dr. Kelly Herbst about what’s going on in the evening sky right now and how you can find things for yourself! We will be using Starry Night Dome planetarium software (many thanks to Spitz, Inc. for giving us access to this great resource!) so we are guaranteed to be able to do some “observing” no matter what the weather is like…and then you can take what you learn outside and do a little stargazing for yourself whenever the sky in your area permits!
