Naturally Speaking: Meghan Weinpress-Galipeau

January 19, 2023: Adaptive Feeding Behavior in Bottlenose Dolphins

The Virginia Living Museum’s Naturally Speaking Lecture Series is a virtual and in-person interactive discussion that brings fascinating details about our local, regional and global ecosystems directly to you! Each lecture is hosted by the VLM Executive Director Rebecca Kleinhample and brings a different speaker into the spotlight!

Meghan Weinpress-Galipeau is an educator and research scientist at the South Carolina Aquarium.  She studies the distribution and behavior of the Atlantic bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) that are residential to Charleston, SC.  Bottlenose dolphins around the world are known for their adaptive feeding tactics, and Meghan and her team recently discovered a novel feeding behavior, coined shipside feeding, in the Charleston Harbor.  The dolphins use commercial shipping vessels as a barrier to aid in catching fish.  Learn more about how dolphins in Charleston, and around the world, have adapted the presence of humans in their habitats.
