Amazing Pollinators June 18 – September 18, 2022 Pollinators are everywhere! They play a vital part in our world’s ecosystem, and are an incredibly varied group. Amazing Pollinators is a visually-stunning, game-based, role-play adventure immersing audiences in the colorful and diverse world of pollinator/plant relationships. Developed in collaboration with the Florida Museum of Natural History and the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, the exhibit weaves fascinating stories with urgent messages about pollinators, the critical work they do, and their importance to people and planet. Turtle Census 2022 The Virginia Living Museum Education and Herpetology staff began a multi-year research project to monitor the population changes of freshwater turtles in a local watershed over time. Every year in June and July we set out live-capture, baited hoop nets in Deer Park Lake to catch and survey as many turtles as possible. VLM Staff and volunteers gather all of the turtles that are collected in these nets and spend the morning identifying the species and sex of the turtles, cleaning the shell to remove any stuck-on algae, and using a special marking system to determine whether each turtle is new for the year or a recapture from previous years. In 2022 the dates are: June 25 (9-11:30am) ~~July 9 (9-11:30am)~~ Due to the predicted weather, this event has been moved to July 23 (9-11:30am) July 16 (9-11:30am) The 11:30am end time is an estimation, census activities will go until completion. Sign up \| July 23 Please wear weather appropriate attire, this event will take place outside. Gloves will be provided. Please bring your own water bottle. Super Science Live Time: 11:30am & 2:30pm, Friday-Sunday (May 30 – September 5) Duration: 15 minutes These daily science demonstrations will help guests learn about pollinators and the role they play in the ecosystem. The program discussions include: Wind tubes and discussion of air flow Elephant toothpaste and discussion of exothermic chemical reactions Air-zooka and discussion of air pressure Diet Coke and Mentos and discussion of pollinator energy consumption
