Shop the Virginia Living Museum’s Native Plant Sale September 16-17 & 23-24

Newport News, VA (September 5, 2023) Gardeners are invited to shop the Native Plant Sale at the Virginia Living Museum (VLM) over two weekends—September 16-17 and September 23-24 from 9:00-4:30 pm. Members of the VLM have exclusive early access during the Member Preview Sale on Thursday, September 14, from 4:00-6:00 pm.

The Virginia Living Museum Native Plant Sale features more than 150 different species and is one of the largest native plant sales in the region. All plants for sale are free of insecticides and propagated at the museum from seeds, cuttings, and plugs. A list of anticipated native flowers, grasses, trees, and shrubs will be available on the VLM’s website, thevlm.org, one week before the sale.

During the sale, the VLM’s Horticulture Department staff and volunteers will be available to help gardeners choose plants based on a variety of needs. Many gardeners choose native plants in order to attract butterflies, hummingbirds, and other wildlife to their yards.

“Native plants are an excellent choice, since they require less maintenance and water than annuals during the hot summer months,” says Darl Fletcher, the Virginia Living Museum’s Horticulture Curator. “Planting native also increases biodiversity and provides food sources for a variety of pollinators. Our hope is to introduce gardeners to native plant species they can use in their landscaping that attract and support native insect and animal species.”

All proceeds from the sale support the educational experiences and conservation efforts of the VLM.
