Artisans in the sheet metal shop at Newport News Shipbuilding designed and created wildlife-themed gates “The Gateway to Nature” for the Virginia Living Museum’s Conservation Gardens in August 2009.
Designed by Production Control Planner Kenny Edwards, the gates contain more than a dozen animals in and around a wide tree. The design is based on the logo for the capital campaign for the Museum’s 2004 building. The two 10-foot-long gates were designed on the computer, laser cut out of 1/16 of an inch stainless steel, welded and hand-polished at the shipyard.
The gates are a gift to the Museum from the shipyard.
