Virginia Living Museum Research Published in International Scientific Journal

Discover how Virginia Living Museum staff are helping advance animal welfare through published scientific research.

From caring for native wildlife each day to advancing the science of animal welfare, the work happening at the Virginia Living Museum extends far beyond our exhibits.

We’re proud to share that members of our Animal Care team recently co-authored a peer-reviewed article published in Frontiers in Ethology. The paper explores how training and environmental enrichment can improve the welfare of ectotherms—including reptiles, amphibians, fish, and invertebrates—and highlights innovative work being done right here at the Virginia Living Museum. The authors hope their findings will inspire other zoos and aquariums to expand enrichment and training programs for these often-overlooked species.
