You Say It’s Your Birthday!

Hey there Space Science fans!  I just wanted to post a quick update to wish the Hubble Space Telescope a happy 29th birthday!  This amazing spacecraft and telescope is one of the great triumphs of 20th century NASA and continues to provide incredible images as well as cutting-edge science.

As has become traditional, the Space Telescope Science Institute (the gang responsible for managing the Hubble) has given all of us a beautiful gift to mark the occasion.  Check it out:

The Southern Crab Nebula. Released by STSci in honor of Hubble’s 29th birthday. Thanks, Hubble!

This stunning image shows what happens when a red giant star and a white dwarf star enter the final phases of their co-existence.  It’s hard to say anything except…wow.

The Hubble Space Telescope is still going strong and should continue to produce gorgeous images like the one above well into the next decade.  Hopefully, the successor to Hubble, the James Webb Space Telescope, will be launched in 2021, meaning that we’ll have both the original and it’s new compatriot sending us fantastic images to both amaze and educate us.

Happy Birthday Hubble, and here’s to many. many more.
