Rock's Fun Facts!

  • Recognizing he couldn’t survive in the wild, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service granted permission for him to live permanently at Lakeside, where he became an educational ambassador. Today, this eagle helps people of all ages learn about raptors, their adaptations, and the challenges they face in the wild.
  • If you look closely, you’ll notice a federal band on the right leg. And though it’s hard to tell with eagles, the smaller size suggests this bird is most likely a male.

This eagle was rescued in 2006 in Nodaway County by an agent with the Missouri Department of Conservation and brought to a veterinary clinic in St. Joseph. At about five years old, he had already faced a life-changing injury—part of the right wing, just below the wrist, was missing. Without the “finger bones” and the flight feathers they hold, he could never fly again.
