Exciting News!
Starting November 7th, you will find new trash and recycling bins around the Museum. Last year, our Green Teens collected data on what visitors were throwing away and recycling here at the Museum. Their goal was to find a way to increase recycling rates.
“We discovered the most common items recycled at the museum are plastic bottles and aluminum cans. It can be confusing trying to figure out what can and can’t be recycled, so we wanted to focus on these specific items to reduce contamination.
Contamination is when recyclable items are dirty or mixed with trash, which results in none of the items being able to be recycled. So our new recycling bins are only for aluminum cans and plastic bottles.
Recycling conserves resources and protects the environment, helping us create a healthier planet for ourselves and future generations. It contributes to the safety and welfare of the animals that you come to see at the Living Museum.
You can find these new cans at our in the main museum building, Wason Education Center, and in the new Wild Care Center. Just look for the bright blue bins!”
This project wouldn’t be possible without support from Virginia Natural Gas, Keep America Beautiful, and Crush it Crusade from Can’d Aid.
