At first glance, Sarge the bobcat looks like he is simply enjoying a quiet morning, resting in the sun or watching the world from a high perch. His story is a reminder of how closely wildlife and people share the same spaces, and what that means for animals like him.
Sarge’s journey began in Dinwiddie, where he was found as a young kitten after a vehicle strike that he survived, but his mother did not. He spent his first six months in the care of a licensed wildlife rehabilitator and veterinary team, receiving the support he needed to grow strong enough for the next step in his life.
In October 2019, Sarge arrived at the Virginia Living Museum. As he continued to grow, his care team monitored an injury to his front leg. Over time, it became clear that amputation would give him the best long term quality of life. With that decision, Sarge adapted quickly to moving through the world on three legs.
Today, Sarge is a confident and curious bobcat who shows guests just how capable wildlife can be. He climbs, explores, and rests high above his habitat, using his surroundings with ease. His space is designed to encourage natural behaviors, from navigating climbing structures to investigating enrichment and cooling off near the stream.
As a carnivore, Sarge’s diet includes mice, chicks, fish, and specially prepared meat, with a weekly whole rabbit as his favorite. Guests visiting during feeding times may even hear his signature mealtime vocalizations, small grumbles and mumbles that add to his personality.
Sarge also participates in daily positive reinforcement training, choosing to engage in behaviors that support his care, like shifting between spaces or presenting a paw for a check. These moments highlight an important part of modern animal care, giving animals choice while helping them stay healthy.
While Sarge will always call the museum home, his story reflects a broader reality for bobcats across Virginia. As development and roadways expand into natural habitats, encounters between people and wildlife become more common. Taking simple steps like staying alert while driving, especially at dawn and dusk, can make a meaningful difference.
Sarge may be just one bobcat, but through him, guests can connect with a much bigger story about how we share the landscape and how small actions can help wildlife continue to thrive.
