Behind the Scenes Tours

Get a closer look at the Virginia Living Museum’s animals and exhibits with BEHIND THE SCENES tours of all kinds conducted by members of the Animal Welfare Staff.  This special tour can be customized for families, couples or small groups (not to exceed 9 people). This unique opportunity gives a small group a chance to experience how Animal Welfare Staff cares for the animals in an up-close and personal setting.

Fossils, Franklinite, Furs and More

Connecting people to nature through the use of our non-live collections items, called biofacts, helps create meaningful moments for everyone. Join us in this behind-the-scenes tour where we will explore our collections department, interact with education materials, and learn why having hands-on experiences are important to zoos and aquariums.

Dates: Wednesdays at 2:00p.m. starting June 22.
Duration of activity: 30 minutes with plenty of time to enjoy the rest of the Museum.
Capacity: up to 9 participants.  Participants must be the age of 10 or older.
Guest Tip: Wear comfy shoes, no age minimum, can accommodate a stroller.


VIP Living Exhibits Tour

Join an in-depth VIP tour of the Virginia Living Museum with James Weinpress, Senior Director, Living Exhibits.  James shares his knowledge of animal behavior, management, and care of the museum’s diverse population.  Possible topics covered are venomous snakes, our alligator, Sarge, the bobcat, a deep sea isopod, jellyfish, lined seahorses, red wolves, the Chesapeake Bay Aquarium, and food preparation in the commissary, and more.

Duration of activity: 1 hour.
Capacity: up to 8 participants
Guest Tip: Comfortable shoes, lots of walking, no age minimum.

Garden Lovers Tour

Got a green thumb or know someone who does? Treat them to a walk in our native gardens with one of our VLM Horticulturists! Find out what’s blooming on-site as you go behind the “greens” to see how we’re growing native! You might even leave with tricks and tips you can use in your yard/home garden while understanding the true benefit of planting and growing native plants.

Dates: Alternating Wednesdays at 3:00pm May 25 – September 14.
Duration of activity: 45 minutes with plenty of time to enjoy the rest of the Museum & Trail.
Capacity: up to 9 participants
Guest Tip: Comfortable shoes, lots of walking, no age minimum.

On-Site Horticultural Consultation

During the On-Site Horticultural Consultations, our Horticulture expert will travel to your home to establish what you are looking to accomplish with your landscaping. In a 1-2 hour tour of your yard, our expert will discuss with you what plants you currently have, make suggestions on plantings, and will draw up a rough design plan. $150

  • Call our Reservations Department at 757-595-9135, Monday through Friday, 9 am to 4:30 pm or email us.
  • Payment must be made at the time of the reservation. We accept American Express, Discover, Mastercard and Visa over the phone.
  • Cancellation Policy: $10.00 fee per person if cancellation occurs 2 or more weeks before program, within two weeks fee is raised to $25.00 per person. Rescheduling program has no fee or penalty.
